How do you prioritize your life?

I have a framework for that.

I view my life as the combination of three areas:

  1. Family

For me, family comes first. My fundamental purpose is to provide them with what they need: protection, support, guidance, companionship, etc.

  2. Work

My work enables me to make a difference - for my clients, for their customers, and, indirectly, for my family.

  3. Self

I have to take care of myself in order to accomplish the priorities that are bigger than I am.

These three elements are interdependent. All are necessary for the health of the others. I have a hard time being happy unless I'm achieving progress in at least one of these areas.

And yet when it comes to allocating time, it's a bit of a zero-sum game. It requires balance. That makes this framework a good system for governing my decisions around where to spend my time and effort.

This framework also helps me when considering a consumer's priorities. Where will a given person choose to invest their time and attention? Which sector will be the most motivating? Which is out of balance? Using this framework, I can provide a more holistic context when developing value propositions.

Frameworks are tools, and this one has been handy.
